What equipment/devices should be controlled/monitored by Apex?

@SuncrestReef has a series of Apex Tutorials. I think most of the links can be found in this post: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/apex-newbi.669000/#post-6783825

You can do so much I'm not sure what to start with suggestions but heaters would be one of the first things I'd connect. If your heaters have their own thermostat then Apex can give you an additional layer of backup/redundancy. Beyond that just about everything can be controlled or at least monitored in some way or another so it probably becomes more about prioritizing how many outlets you have left available.

Thanks for linking my tutorial articles!

Before jumping into the programming tutorials, I highly recommend you carefully review this list of best practices for a new Apex setup: https://forum.neptunesystems.com/showthread.php?14598-New-APEX-Users-Read-This-Thread!

Here's my Apex controlled items:

1x 832 Power bar
Light 1 Timer
Light 2 Timer
Waver (2x Rossmont 4100 pumps) Always on -w- feed mode
Heater BRS controller plugged into this for redundancy. Shuts off if temp exceeds normal
Skimmer Shuts off if sump water level above normal
Zeolite Reactor Shuts off if sump water level above normal
DOS - Always on, allows me to manually shut it off if I want to pause dosing
Return Pump Always on, water change mode

1x EB8
E Water Shutoff - Electric ball valve, shuts off RODI supply if sump or mixing station water level above normal
Under cabinet shelving light - Timer
Mixing station pump - Manual, wired to toggle switch.
5 currently unused plugs.

Trident measures Alk/Calc/Mag daily, controls DOS directly, keeping Calc and Alk stable.

DOS - Calc and Alk dosing

Old Display Module for pH, Salinity, and Temp at a glance

Probes for pH, Temp, Salinity

DIY Break Out Box:
Float switch for above normal sump level
Float switch for above normal mixing station barrel
Toggle switch for Mixing station pump

All sorts of alarms and alerts to let me know if there is something wrong...

Honestly, I'm not certain how I managed without one.
