The unfinished side is for our crested gecko vivarium.

That looks pretty nice! I just built one myself for a new tank. Building your own stand gives you so many more options!

Nice looking stand! I like the doors (or front panels). Good job making 2x4's look like more than 2x4's!

Looks well built but not a huge fan of the burnt finish, though I understand it makes the wood stronger.
Taking a torch to wood doesn't do anything to strengthen the wood, this is just for the look. You may be thinking of the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, which involves charring the wood, but is a bit more involved, and serves to weatherproof the wood, not so much for structural support.
