Hello, just started my 30 gallon tank 1 week ago with dry rock and sand. I did the shrimp thing which spiked the ammonia to 4ppm. Tested the water today;
ammonia .25
nitrite .5
nitrate 10
I really didn't think I'd see the ammonia come down and nitrate come this fast. Should I do a wc now or wait another week?

You can do a WC now.

Did you pull out the shrimp yet? If not, do it. There was sufficient benefical bacteria to break down ammonia --> nitrite --> nitrate, which is what you saw. Keep letting the tank sit for a while prior to adding anything.

I would let the ammonia clear up before I did a water change

That way you are sure that the main part of your cycle is complete.

WC when ammonia is zero and nitrate at 5 then add your clean up crew and wait a couple of weeks.

I let my first tank sit in the dark for 3 months before I started adding anything. Good Luck on your tank!
