New to the reef and this sump process

I have a 55 gallon tank and am in the process of setting it up. Going great and for being empty except for live rock and live sand, it looks okay. However, this sump is another matter. I have always had freshwater and this is my first saltwater. I have a Coralife 65G as a hang on sump and I cannot seem to get the intake air and the bubble correct. I either have nothing in collection cup or it is about to overflow. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I learn how to become a reefer. I also want to add that this forum is awesome as I looked at several before joining you. You are great bunch with friendly and helpful tips for all levels.

Welcome ! I think what you are calling a sump is actually your protein skimmer :) They can take while to settle down(from days to a few weeks). Then it will be easier to adjust.

Thank you mike. Mixing up the sump at the bottom to the skimmer at the top. Not using a sump for this tank. :)

Your welcome. Also, until you have livestock, your skimmer won't have much to skim unless you have live rock dying off, so don't expect much from your skimmer right now if anything.

When you have a tank full of freshly mixed salt, your skimmer will go a little nuts even without anything in the tank but the water. Depending on how efficient the skimmer is, will depend on how quickly it settles down. Keep an eye on the skimmer because no matter how low of a setting you try to set it on, it's still going to foam like crazy on a newly salt mixed tank until it settles in.

Bearjohsnon, that was part of the problem. Lots of water and no foam. I finally have the intake full and the foam, bubble, all the way down and am starting to see foam. Been making quarter adjustments all week to get this far. Patience is a virtue and with skimmers I guess that is more true. ;)
