I upgraded from a 100 gallon tank to a 230 gallons back in March and since then I haven't done a single water change.

I dose kalkwasser (5 liters/day) and trace elements from the Red Sea Colors Program (15ml/week).

Here's the Magnesium readings:

I feed a couple of cubes of mysis everyday, a small amount of flake food and some food I made with shrimp, white fish, nori and fish eggs.

I used the magnesium test (Aqua forest) on a friend's tank water and it was under 1200.

He brought me some nassarius snails and they have been paralized.

What's going on with the magnesium?

No, but I have a tiny bag with some media in the sump that was offered in a online purchase of other stuff. 100 grams at most.

Some media may be rich in mag. Along 1500-1600 range.

I myself am starting to wonder if kalk adds to the mag levels. I rarely if ever dose mag but I'm always in the 1450-1500+ range.

Did you start with Red Sea Coral Pro salt? Their salt is known to run high in Mg, and magnesium uptake is pretty slow. It looks like it is trending down now.

I started with Aquaforest Reef Salt. It sould have 1300-1360 Mg.

I am going to remove the media.

In 13 years, I never dosed magnesium.

Maybe it's kalk and the fact that some of the precipitate at the bottom of the container is being dosed?

There's your answer there, that salt has frequently been found high in mag...make up some & test it will prove it

There are quite a few cases.

I no longer have the bucket that I used to fill the tank but I checked the ICP analysis of the bucket I am using now on:

https://aquaforest.eu/en/icp-oes-results/

Mg: 1322

I tested the water I just made with that batch: 1590.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I guess it's time to look for another salt brand.

I just called the guy at the store I got the last bucket and he told me he has received more complaints and that he's going to stop selling this salt.
