I modified the intake on my protein skimmer and what a difference it has made! Instead of the usual single line intake mine has 3 1/4" lines coming in forming a triangle before the powerhead. The added air and chyto in the return compartment has improved water conditions big time. Only thing is... The intake tubes are gargling loud as anything now and I need to shut them up. I was thinking about joining the three at a manifold and on each side hang a long air stone. Anyone else find a way to muffle the sound or even had an issue with it?

Silencer. You can either buy them or make your own out of a film canister.

Put barbs on them and drill holes for the air?

Pretty much. Just put a barb on bottom, and hook the line to that. Drill a hole up top for the intake of air (no barb needed really), and stick a couple cotton balls in there for extra noise reduction.
