Is this a reef tank with corals? If so I would recommend going with smaller reef fish. Maybe 5-6 small fish.

What is your setup? What type of equipment do you have? Total system volume? What type of corals do you have? I'm wondering because I'm building a 40 very soon.

I have a hydor powerhead, a jager heater, and dual 10,000K daylight with 426/460 actinic lights. also a HOB filter. I have a protein skimmer but have not set it up yet (having issues with it).

As for corals: Purple condy Anemone, Green bubble tip anemone, waving hand, yellow polpys, Australian Lord Acan, Blue mushroom, Martian man palythoas, and Green candy apple zoas

I was thinking of having an extremely large bioload with about 6-8 fish. But I'm using a big skimmer, 40g sump, biopellets and a fuge with cheato. I'm just going to add fish.until I see a little bit of nitrate.

You already have 2 anemones in the tank that'll take up a good amount of what a 40g can handle. You mention "safely" but then you say you want to max out your tank on your last comment. If you want to safely do your tank then go with the less is more approach. If you "must" have more fish just get a bigger tank. A skimmer and sump will help with the bioload but you also want the fish enough room for them all to have their own swimming space plus resting/hiding/sleeping space.

I have a 15 gallon reef with
RBTA
clown pair
manderine dragonet
fire fish
gorgonia and other corals
sexy shrimp, cleaner shrimp and other CUC
five gallon fuge

my tank is doing good so imo i would say 7 fish for a 40 breeder or if you do weekly water changes like I do or find another way to keep nitrates down then I say 10 max, i’m not 15 btw and i’m upgrading to a 40b as well

It depends. If you get nano aquarium fish who are peaceful 3 - 4 but 6 is not out of the question.

But many fish are just out of the question: tangs and large angels for example.

How many fish can I safely keep in a 40 gallon tank?
I feel like many of these replies are misleading saying you must only keep 3-4 or else your bio load will be too high ect, I have a 40 gallon sps tank with 7 fish, flame hawk, 2 clowns, 3 blue chromis and a starry blenny, my nitrates are always 1ppm and my phosphates 0.1ppm not quite sure what these people are talking about saying you need a sump and expensive equipment like a very good slimmer, I have a cannister filter in which I clean around once every 2 months and a fluval mini protein skimmer, I do water changes about once a month, so as long as long as you check your Params and they are within expected ranges your fine

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
