Good evening. I am thinking about running Ozone however my RSK300 isnt O-Zone rated. I know some people use a small skimmer that is Ozone rated to run it. How small can you go? Like would a tiny hang on the back work? Or do you need substantial size?

Yes—you can use a smaller ozone-rated skimmer, even something like a compact hang-on-back (HOB) model. However, its effectiveness will depend on a few key factors:
Key considerations:

1. Contact Time & Reaction Volume

  • Ozone needs adequate contact time with water to oxidize organics effectively. This usually happens in the skimmer body.
  • A tiny skimmer might not provide enough dwell time unless it's specifically designed to handle ozone safely and efficiently.
  • You might also lose a lot of ozone as gas quickly if the body is too small and not sealed well.

2. Ozone Injection Control

  • You'll want very precise control over how much ozone is being injected—generally no more than 5–15 mg/hr per 50 gallons of water.
  • With a smaller skimmer, stay on the lower end of ozone dosing to avoid over-oxidation or excess ozone leaking into the room.

3. Air Handling & Off-Gassing

  • Small skimmers often don't handle ozone off-gassing well.
  • You'll need to run the skimmer air output through carbon (like a carbon sock or air dryer tower) to neutralize excess ozone.
  • Similarly, skimmer cup overflow or reactor exhaust must pass through carbon to avoid ozone release into your home. If you're looking for a compact, ozone-safe skimmer, consider these:
    • Reef Octopus Classic 100-HOB – HOB, solid construction, ozone-safe.
    • Deltec MCE600 – Excellent build, ozone-compatible, quiet and efficient.
    • AquaMaxx HOB 1.5 or HOB-S – Some models are ozone-resistant (confirm materials).
    • Nyos Quantum 120 – If you want something small-footprint and sump-ready.

Thank you for your response!

Would something small like this work?
