Ocellaris Right?

Joined this forum to find out, I got a new clownfish the other day and LFS said it was ocellaris clown and it looks like it is just like my other but then it has the all black eye with black iris too but the original Oc doesn’t and I can’t count the dorsal spines. It only been almost 3 days but wanted to make sure it was all normal, because new one is chasing old one

Then I noticed that the original clown had much more black in the eye than the new one. I heard that Percula have more black in the iris and pupil so is it an ocellaris?, or is it a Percula. Because i noticed the og chasing the new clown a bit so is this normal for first few days or are they different species fighting? I know that was lengthy but thank you for the help

Looks like an Ocellaris to me. When you add another clown, you should expect a bit of fighting early, especially if they are close to the same size. As you may know, all clownfish are born gender neutral, and once paired, the more dominant (which will be determined by their fighting) will become the female, less dominant will be the male. They both look like false percs, but even if not they are compatible. Probably just normal clown aggression. Was the new clown smaller than the old? I hope so, otherwise the old might have started to become female.

I don't think one week with another clown in the tank would have made a huge difference, however a strategy that I have found helpful is to purchase 1 fish noticeably larger than the other, this minimizes fighting and speed up the process of becoming a bonded pair.

Those look like Ocellaris to me. Percula tend to have more Orange in their eyes, obviously there is some variation given all the captive breeding going on:

I don't think one week with another clown in the tank would have made a huge difference, however a strategy that I have found helpful is to purchase 1 fish noticeably larger than the other, this minimizes fighting and speed up the process of becoming a bonded pair.

Good point. i glossed over the 1 week timeline.

I also usually get one larger, and one smaller. If you are adding them in a particular order you should start with larger though. The gender op is oneway.

I guess, though a fish wouldn't become a female without another in the tank, at least I don't think, so it doesn't matter too much when you add the larger. Clownfish are interesting... I have a male that had eggs with his female, and when she died, converted to a female and is now laying eggs.

Nope, sole clownfish in a tank will become female.

Nope, sole clownfish in a tank will become female.

I can't speak to identifiying them. but;

Your clowns will fight if they are the same species, that is normal. They have to establish a pecking order, and one will wind up on top. It took my clowns about two weeks to settle into deciding who was going to be in charge. Lots of chasing, charging, and 'seizure displays' to show submissiveness.

Here's a picture of my percula. You can appreciate that the iris is orange and sharply outlines the smaller pupil.
With an ocellaris, the edge of the pupil is much less distinct as it merges into the darker iris.
