Old School 3Reef Members

Just a point of curiosity. Realizing that people come and go, I would expect that some would drop off the face of the planet. But I have not seen ONE old member of 3Reef on here. NOT ONE! I was active from about 2008 to 2014. Anyone else a former member?

I had actually never heard of 3Reef until you mentioned it on the other thread.

I started in 2000 and was mostly on Reefs.org and Reef Central, we had a local group start on RC then created our own short lived Vermont forum until around 2014, but was fizzling out a few years earlier.

I was pretty much off the big forums from 2010 until I joined here in 2017.

Sadly I was the last mod standing. Made some good friends that I am still in contact with.

Just checked out RC and you're right! Not a lot of recent posts! I'd actually like to see a metric on how active the more popular sites are! Compared to each other and compared to the past!

All three of these coexisted and I remember back when RC was the biggest and then R2R and 3reef were active but just smaller. Things changed and I’m glad we’re all here but I sometimes am curious about what/how it happened.

Yeah. I'd heard of RC, of course, but not R2R. The only reason I came to this site was a notation in 3Reef that R2R had bought them out. I'm VERY happy I saw this!

Why did RC go dead?

There probably isn't one main reason as everyone has their own tipping point.

This is how I recall it.

Towards the end RC was getting very heavy handed with the bans and infractions. It created a lot of enemies. They definitely weren't afraid of enforcing the rules.

Then you had the platform in which the forum was built upon. Over the years they were doing a lot of custom patches to the forum to keep it fresh. Little did they know that it would paint them in a corner when trying to update to the latest forum software. Remember when RC went down and no one knew if or when it was going to pop back up?

IIRC, at the time, R2R was a zoa forum and it had just transition into a more general reef keeping site. I remember, it was a ghost town and David (Rev) enabled the generic games offered by the forum software, one being poker. A bunch of us would set a time and play. At that time the site wasn't even on many peoples radar. It was like how Humble.fish was about 2 years or so ago.

There was a popular user on RC that had s very public exchange with staff and prompted a mass exit from the site. Eventually people started to accumulate here. It wasn't until R2R started to do mass giveaways (that sort of stuff wasn't the norm back then) that solidified this forum and put the final nail in the coffin of RC.

I honestly think, if it weren't for RC trying to force users into a particular mold, R2R wouldn't have had the success they did.

I was pretty active over there and even won of of their contests - the one where you had to design your own reef-related beer label. I even helped design the last version of the 3Reef logo.

I never heard of 3reef but was a member on RC. Actually I still am. I accidently got slapped with infractions when I first was on RC because I was older than most and did not understand how forums worked. I wanted to sell some extra live rock on the local forum and asked what an appropriate price would be and was banned for 2 months! That was so upsetting to me that I moved to nano-reef and did not go back for years. I do have a couple of friends I talk to on RC but I spend more time on R2R.
