OMG too much too Choose from

Hello everyone I have always been a FOWLR guy but now that I made the right career choices i went Reef with some fish (all reef safe!) now that the equipment for sustaining corals is more affordable to me.

Hey yall, happy Taco Tuesday!

So a month ago i picked up a frag of Zoa that i haven’t been able to identify yet out of the $35 section of my LFS. It has taken off and is thriving. It has more than doubled in size since then from 5 polyps to 16.

Friday I am heading up to my LFS to get one or two more frags and need advice as to what is a next good step for corals? They have $1k corals but i am not there YET haha.

any advice is greatly appreciated!

Soft corals are great to start with. Hardy and very forgiving of parameter shifts. Best advice? Buy what you can afford to replace!

i like the corals frog spawn, torch, brain and mushrooms and zenia. Maybe not all Soft corals (still learning) but on my list. was also thinking another frag of zoas too. Friday I am looking to spend $150 on one or a couple corals.

Great results w the zoas. Tbh you don’t need the 1k corals for an incredible display. If you are going softies now u can get nepthea, sinularia, sarcophyton , zoa, mushrooms, and some lps favia platy or acans. Gorgonians make great additions, photosynthetic ofc, good source is gulf coast ecosystems.

torch can be a little finicky but that is a good list.

this is great advice, nothing will take the wind out of your sails like buying a 2-300$ collectors coral that just dies on you a few days later…

just pick what you like, not what’s expensive or fancy. Stay away from Xenia and green star polyps though they will be a nightmare to control later on

I heard the Xenia & Green stars can easily take over a tank. I just love the way they look but I don't need that hassle. Kind of worried about the Zoas I have too. That rock can always find a place of its own if it gets out of control.

if you really like one or the other, put it on an 'island' so you can control it, not your main rockwork.

incidentally, id love to do a 'ada-style' nano tank with just GSP one day....

Check out leathers. They come in a lot of shapes and colors and are good growers. They are great in newer reefs because the leathers can be great fillers.
