Hi all

Came back from a week trip and noticed my fish have grew and went fat.

I’m new to the hobby. Are they pregnant?

Any ideas ?

Hello,
This is a saltwater forum, so you may not get many answers.

If there are males and females in the tank, Freshwater live bearers like platys, swordtails, and guppies, etc, are pregnant more than they are not, so my guess is yes.

Your photos are a bit fuzzy, so I can’t quite tell the sexes, but the orange marbled looks like a male and the top one looks more like a female. I can’t tell what the middle one looks like.

Platys as a whole, though, tend to look a lot broader and rounder than other fish.

From the look of your photo, it would appear that your fish are pregnant they have rounded and distended abdomens this is a characteristic of pregnant live bearers such as mollies or platies. Also, they might show some changes in behavior such as hiding more. If that be the case, it would probably be prudent on your part to provide them with some safe place for delivery lol also . It would be well to provide them with high quality food such as crushed flakes or live frozen brine shrimp. Also, ensure that some crushed food are provided once they give birth.

As a general rule of thumb, female poeciliids are almost always pregnant. But when they start to look like a "rectangle", that's when you know they're about to give birth. You don't need to do anything crazy. Just let nature take its course and make sure there's plenty of spots for the babies to hide.
