What are the criteria to become more than a supporting member?

As an example, I see Moderators, Super Moderators, people assigned to the Reef Squad, Staff, Excellence Awards and Article Contributors.

I'm curious to know what considerations go into selecting users for such responsibilities?

Yes... I had a feeling someone would point to this thread.

But I notice some people are active, have been here for years, and are simply a supporter while some have been here two and are heavily submerged in so many different responsibilities.

Has the person who has been here for years chosen not to become more involved? Have they gone unnoticed? Selection seems rather arbitrary.
