Over flow placement

Im setting up a 75 gallon tank and need to drill through the glass for the over flow. I’m planning on getting the large ESHOPPS over flow for it.

The question is, is there a best place to put it? I want to place it on the width (19”) of the the tank, but I see a lot of people put it in the middle of the length of the tank (50”)

Does the placement matter?

There are some theories about where to place your overflow, but if you're not using a coast-to-coast overflow (one which spans the full, long, back side of your tank), I believe these theories are moot.

If you've have not ordered you overflow yet, could I suggest the ones from Modular Marine? I Believe these are the best on the market currently:

I haven’t bought it yet. You would recommend an overflow that spans the whole width of where I place it?

Placing overflow on the width is often referred to as “peninsula” configuration! In fact, my 180G is plumbed this way!

External overflow in Peninsula configuration is primarily beneficial if you want to have the tank’s width against a wall to expose both long viewing panes to the room! — it does come with flow challenges, as getting water to the opposite end from the overflow without visible plumbing can be tricky…

The return can be on the same side as overflow, or snuck up through a canopy to the opposite side!

Either way, I recommend just using over the rim piping for your return plumbing, I don’t feel super comfortable poking a bunch of holes in a short side pane too close together…

For a 75g, 3/4” plumbing, and a pump advertised at ~550-800gph will be plenty!

I totally get no unnecessary holes in the glass I’ll do the over the rim for the return. Thanks for the advice!

The Coast-To-Coast overflow seems to have dropped out of fashion lately, I don't know why.

To me so you can have room for any other pieces of equipment that compete for the space , and the best spot to accommodate the drains to where they enter your sump
