I have a new tank coming that I'll need to install an external overflow on. I've narrowed it down to the Eshopps Eclipse-L or the Modular Marine 1200 GPH. Other than price, the major differences seem to be:
First, the Modular Marine mounts up higher, such that it claims it won't overflow if the drain is closed. In practice, how common is that? Especially with an emergency drain pipe installed, it seems to me like you would need a very strange confluence of events to overflow the box.
Second, the Modular Marine defaults to 3/4" plumbing, while the Eshopps defaults to 1". I'm planning on using 3/4" plumbing anyhow (I have some nice gate valves already for some projects I never ended up doing), so that's a slight point in favor of the Modular Marine. But, reducing fittings also exist, so that doesn't seem like a huge deal.
I might have a credit someplace that sells the Eshopps, so there would be a significant price difference for me between the two. It's very tempting to go that route. I'm also a firm believer in doing things right the first time, though, so if there's a major reason to go with Modular Marine over Eshopps beyond what I can see here I can justify spending more.
