I was given a 180g tank and stand. It has wood trim on the tank, and wood grain stand. I want to paint it white. What is the best type of paint to use? I have painted tanks/stands in the past with latex based paint if I remember right and it gave them a rubber feel that peeled a bit if caught on something or when sliding the tank on. I'm not opposed to using it again if its the best suited for being around salt water I was just wonder if there are better options that I should be painting?

I assume there is a clearcoat (polyurethane or similar)? To get the paint to adhere well, you will need to lightly sand it. You can then use whatever paint you prefer. I like exterior latex, both for durability and ease of cleanup. As a added bonus, it doesn't stink the house up like many oil based paints can.

Give the stand a light sanding with small grit paper. Wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove dust. Use an exterior oil primer for extra protection and adhesion, There are two types of oil primer fast dry or long term dry, use the fast, Paint with latex or oil. Latex will stick to today's oil primers. Latex dries faster but oil is a bit more protective. Oil may take a few days to dry, depending on conditions. Gloss paint is more scuff resistant than flat.
