So.. this guy showed up at my work and gave me a 1 foot long panther grouper. I currently have him in quarantine in a 75 gallon tank and plan to put him in a 150 gallon tank as his permanent home. What would be good to put with him? I have some damsels in with him and he leaves them alone, could a cleaner shrimp be ok with him too? He seems pretty friendly and personable. Surprisingly he doesn’t hide as much like most groupers and he seems to only like to eat freeze dried Krill and rarely silversides. The guy had him in a community tank before I got him and he had is since it was about the size of a small damsel.

Any fish it can't eat really, or will not eat or harrass the grouper. Fish like tangs or large Angelfish, buttetlyfish etc maybe or other large tall bodied fish

I'd say it may work alright, someone with more experience with Anglerfish may be better to help you

Ah ok, would an angler be ok with him?
If he's a foot long now, he's about half grown... expect him to keep right on growing. Theoretically, groupers can eat anything that fits in their mouth... and panther groupers can open wide. He's likely to be quite capable of eating anything that's half his own size, or smaller.

That said... Panther groupers are not particularly aggressive, as far as predatory fishes go. If you keep him well fed, he's not likely to go after your other fishes. Smaller fishes that can move well, wrasses and such, would probably be OK. More aggressive fishes, some of the large angels, some of the tangs, triggers, etc. are more likely to terrorize the panther than they are to become a snack.

A good friend had a good sized Panther, probably 15" or so, in a 180 gallon tank, along with a fair sized green moray and a big marine betta. All predators, none of them particularly aggressive, lived peacefully for years.

I love the context. As if a guy just randomly brought a 1 ft grouper to work[emoji23]

What if you said No?

He said he didn’t want it cause it 3 of his shrimp. He was angry at the fish and said the store can take it before he kills it so I asked my boss to take it and he said no so I took it lol.
