I've been wondering if I should change my feeding from flakes to pellets. Ive been using flakes for about 8 months but I've noticed my tang is getting skinny, and he doesn't seem interested in algae. Thanks for the help!

Feed frozen LRS and Nori in addition to dry foods.

Corn flakes
Dry granola bar pellets.
Get some popsicles (Hikari or whatever)
Or fresh live clams and muscles from the grocery store and give your fish a homemade meal at least once a week to keep them healthy and happy.

Dried foods are like a diet of potato chips and popcorn. I guess it’s ok if you wash it down with a beer or soda but food is not just something to put in the gut, it is supposed to provide nutrition.

Best served fresh

Good suggestion.....Thats some great eating there for a Tang.....(even my clowns eat that up)
This is a newer food for me, but my Tail Spot Blenny loves them. I've heard Tangs do too, and I've heard other fish, like your Clowns, also grab them.

How did you get a copy of my personal diet plan?

When I have more fish to feed (when I get my new tank setup) I plan on making my own foods, I've dabbled in it in the past. I also know that Dan P feeds live foods because he says it bolsters the fish's immune system, which I get.

But, is there no concern with introducing fish parasites via live foods? I QT all my fish and everything "wet". I had thought that when you get things like clams and muscles live from the market that you should freeze them first to avoid parasites (poor clams).

What do you think?

I catch my clams at the beach and muscles which I chop up and feed my fish. I would not eat them raw but my fish do and they are happy and healthy so far.

I guess you could set up a QT for them and if they get Ich treat them with copper? :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes::cool:

If a tang isn't interested in eating algae I would look into some beneficial gut bacteria. The tang could have a stomach ache. Honestly it wouldn't hurt and it helps with digestion.

Also, making your own food is a great idea. I used to make my own with live brine, chopped seafood spirulina powder( I was too lazy to grow my own) and if I went fishing I would hang a light over the side at night to attract swarms of planktonic creatures that also went into the food. My wife found some ice trays that were similar size to the Hikari frozen cubes and I stunk up the kitchen when I chopped and mixed the stuff. Never had issues with that food either.

Gosh no! I wasn't suggesting that I QT my live food clams lol!

I'm saying, I put a lot of effort into QT'ing all my livestock. Is there not a risk with feeding live foods?

Yes, it’s possible.

If you freeze it and then thaw it I think the likelihood of problems is pretty low.

I feed mine fresh and freshly frozen & thawed and they eat it so fast that any pathogens are digested before they knew what happened.

^That's it! I think that's what I've been reading, and what I will do. Thanks brother!

Why the question of one OR the other? Why not both?

I have an auto feeder 4x a day flake, or pellets, or freeze dried. When it runs out, I switch it up to another food.

When I'm home I have a frozen diy food and once a week a sheet of nori.

Everyone eats at some point in the day.
