A lfs got one of these beauties in. I saw it and thought very pretty fish. Then i saw the price they are going for on open market. I am guessing the lfs will being keeping this fish as a display since it is hard to think of someone spending that on a fish.

Ethically i was wondering should this rare fish even be caught at all.

Ethically I see nothing wrong with it. It's not an endangered fish, just difficult to collect. As far as the price, it's supply and demand.

I'm going to see it today too when I go for other things.
These guys had a pair of Narcosis Angelfish before too. Crazy $$
Completely not true, but my husband is wondering how this little store can have that kind of cash without a 'back room' business of some sort. Lol.

It seems you got the same email i did. At one time had a jewel tang which is another high end fish. They have lots of high end chalices too. Some go for over $1000 an eye.

You are right i had to read up on it and rare in capture not in the wild. I also read they prefer water temps in the low 70's. A good chiller running almost constantly would be needed. Many corals and fish that would be too cold. But i guess if you pay that much for it. It would have its own tank.

Rare in the trade does not imply rare in the wild.

Correct.

Although these were collect at around 400ft, the water temp was 76F.

Although the Peppermint Angel is a beautiful fish, I am not sure it is any more so than my Regal Angel or some of my wrasses. Just my opinion.

There are several angels I thought were prettier. It was a dwarf so the field was a bit smaller.

Angel was purchased

I was at this lfs this past weekend. The fish was only "for sale" for 2 days when purchased by a first time purchaser at the store for $20,000! He has also requested two more and is having them build a 200+ aquarium for just these fish! They said he walked in "off the street" so to speak and said "yup I'll buy it" and wired them the money...crazy, huh?
