So, I had an old fluidized sand bed filter laying around and figured - what have I got to lose. I cut it in half, glued a union on it, and it was good to go. My question is this:
How much flow should I have? I was under the impression that it should tumble like a regular sand bed filter does or carbon reactor. The directions say nay to it. Any advice?

I always thought you wanted it to do a light tumble. More or less just have the water passing through from the bottom to the top. But I am not sure.

The GFO should have only a light roll at the top to prevent it from being pulverized.

+1 light roll/tumble - if you don't with GFO it will turn into a brick. I'd get a pump slightly more than you need than valve it down a touch to get the bit of movement you need.

It's carbon you don't want to tumble, as it will create small fines that will end up in your tank.

Ok, thanks guys. I have it set so that there is a slight fluid motion to the phosban. I haven't noticed any ill - effects from it.
