Pick my next coral!

Hi R2R friends!

I told myself my tank was full and I was done buying corals... but I can’t help myself! I think I have room here (see picture below!) but there’s a catch - it will definitely be shaded from the other acros as they grow out. I’d love to get your coral recommendations on what I could put in this spot. What could do well in a shady area between acros? Maybe a darth maul porites? What do you all think!?

Chalices like low light and there are a lot of great ones out there. JF Burning Banana also does well in low light.

Good ideas! I know my LFS has the JF burning banana. Do you know if it would kill the acros as it grows in? I’ve had encrusting montis run into acros before and they usually have a stalemate until the acro wins.

My Red Dragon acro does very well in lower light. It sits right on the bottom with the zoas. I also think that chalice would be a good fit, lot of pretty ones out there like pink buubies, mummy eye, Miami Hurricane, watermelon etc. Maybe a plating monti?

I do love a monti :D I found a thread last night with a fruity pebble monti that looks great.

has anyone tried out the looney tunes stylo? It looks like that’s another low light option

My Red Dragon acro does very well in lower light. It sits right on the bottom with the zoas. I also think that chalice would be a good fit, lot of pretty ones out there like pink buubies, mummy eye, Miami Hurricane, watermelon etc. Maybe a plating monti?

I like plating Montis but placement is key as they have a fast growth rate and will shade anything below it. A nice rainbow chalice would be nice like CB rainbow crush or a nice Favia like CC meltdown or RR beast mode if you can find it. Raja rampage also does very well in shade and I have a few frags for sale of it currently.

I didn’t even think of chalices! I’m starting to think I have more open real estate than I realized... I have that purple plating monti on the far right to make a cave area and maybe I could glue one of the options down in that area too. right now that’s the dendro lair

I don’t think there’s enough space for and acro or plating monti. They’d probably shade the wild acro on the bottom and that little pink lemonade frag on the right. I really like the look of the Miami hurricane chalice

Very cool! Do you have any pictures of it handy? I’m alway curious if real pictures look close to the pictures you see online. This is one of those “almost too good to be true” corals when I see pictures of it.

Good idea! but probably a little too similar to the dendro. It’s in the dark area below the purple plating monti. They’re fun corals and I’d definitely recommend getting one if you like them. You just have to make sure they get fed

Ah yes similar.... I had a sun years back and it was doing quite well, regular feedings at night, and then I had a bit of a crash...lost it, a bubble and a fair sized plate. Definitely going to try one again to add a bit of colour pop, even when tents retreated in daytime...

I like to put acans in the light dead zones between acros....they like flow and come in a wide variety of colors so you can pick a color that best offsets the acros nearby......

@monti mike I do not know but if I had to place a bet I would say the acro would win against the stylo.
