Would anyone like to share some large (50-100) head Acan colonies that they grew from a frag.

I now have some small colonies that over 2 years old and I’m surprised at how little they have grown once they grew over the old thick skeleton. I’ve noticed that Acan frags almost alway have thick skeletons which makes me wonder if these frags are almost always coming from wild colonies. Or maybe some people have figured out a way to get the skeleton to grow.

Thanks,
John

I’m really wondering how long it takes to grow out a large colony. I used to think a couple years, now I’m thinking maybe 7-10 years.

I had a single head frag that grew into a 60 head colony but it took about 7 years. Unfortunately, I lost it in and Alk swing but I kept the beautiful skeleton.

I bought this colony about 2 years ago now. It’s healthy and has grown heads down the sides but from what I can very little new skeleton has grown.

And that makes a lot of sense why we don’t see many big colonies from frags. I know things have gotten better/easier in this hobby but going 5+ years without some sort of issue seems tough. To make matters worse I do feel like Acans are some of the touchiest corals I have had, even small issues and they let you know.

I've watched our new frags settle in, and patiently waiting for more growth. I feed them 3 xs per week w thawed reef frenzy bits and they plump right up..just no additional growth. Still love the cool colors, and price was very fair 20210403_143727.jpg 20210403_143743.jpg

Not a huge colony but this is 15 months of growth. I got this out of the $5 bin with 3 heads. It was ugly brown with almost no color. Now it’s loaded with colors and has around 12 heads

I ha
these have grown from single head frags in about 3.5 years. Got all 3 at the same time, but the red one has never been as happy as the others and much slower growth.

ve a very similar one to the red one except the blue fringe is on the inside near the mouth.

I am a super big fan of acans, one of my favorites for years, I just recently started acquiring them again and hope to grow some large ones out. They are some of the slowest growers thou. Hopefully I will be able to add some pictures to this thread, even if it is a year or so down the road.

Here’s a few I have. Largest red one is 3 years old and had about 5 heads when I purchased. Other 2 I have had for about a year. Those were given to me since they were just about dead in my friends tank
