Lately I’ve seen pictus blennies (aka white lined blenny) for sale on DD and was wondering about adding one instead of a tailspot to my 10 gallon. Does anyone have experience with the pictus? Is it basically the same as the tailspot in terms of behavior and aggression? I’ve read tailspots spend more time swimming eating plankton than many blennies, what should I expect from a pictus?

Finally, in a 10 gallon would either of these be ok with a Rainford goby or Will aggression occur because they’re both algae eaters? Advice from @eatbreakfast and anyone else with experience of the pictus would be appreciated!

A pictus is a similar, but smaller species. It will be fine with a rainsford goby.

Two more questions- in a 10 gallon could i add the blenny and Rainford goby at the same time or will that lead to an ammonia spike? Just trying to save on live aquaria shipping fees but obviously won’t add both at once if it would cause harm.

Second - how do I know when it is safe to add my next fish?

What have you done to cycle the tank?

What live stock do you have in your tank, if any? Also, second what TJ said. What are your nutrient levels at?

I got the tank a month ago used with a cleaner shrimp, 3 blue legged hermits a nassurias snail and 5 corals. It had previously had 2 clowns that had been rehomed before the tank was sold to me. I kept the tank for a month with no livestock changes, feeding the shrimp pellets and doing weekly 10-15% water changes.

I stuck a seachem badge on and have tested ammonia since adding my first and only fish, a Pygmy geometric hawkfish 1 week ago. So far I’ve had no detectable ammonia(seachem and api test). Nitrate is at 0.1ppm (salifert using reading the test tube through the side since it’s low) and has never been high. I don’t have a phosphate test kit so can’t report on that. Trying to decide if I get salifert or spring for Hanna.

I agree

HOW MUCH DOES A FISH’S FEEDING REQUIREMENTS AFFECT YOUR STOCKING DECISIONS?

  • A lot! - I avoid fish that require frequent or specialized feeding
