Polyester Fiber Filter Balls

Anyone ever use these filter balls as filter media in their reef? They are on Amazon mostly for pool filters. I bought some and they made my skimmer start going nuts when I tried it out for a few minutes so I removed it. The packaging says they are 100% polyester.
