I picked this fish up a couple of weeks ago and it looked perfect until the large lump appeared, it’s feeding really well in the refugium and seems happy enough but look at the lump that’s come up on it’s dorsal flank area?

I’m thinking a internal parasite/nematode or maybe a abscess?

But how would you treat it?

I do have fish anesthetiser so could try and lance or investigate the lump and I have broad spectrum antibiotics for afterwards.

If I treat for internal parasites with something like Flubendazole my concern would be a large parasite dying inside and causing more complications?

Should I just leave it be or act? Should I be concerned it’s contagious?

Only ever experienced Neon Tetra having nematode ‘hatch’ from them and while it was totally disgusting seeing worms many times longer than the fish erupt the fish were fine and luckily the nematode needed birds to complete the life cycle, but I’m totally clueless for this?. That’s unusual. I would leave it be and hope it disappears as fast as it appears. Mostly because I wouldn’t know what else to do.

Pics are blurry to make clear identification but if so, often freshwater dip may dislodge them and would no do so with this fish but prazi pro at 85% of treatment with added oxygen via air stone may work

How fast did the lump appear?
The fish looks really good otherwise.
Mandarins have really thick skin, so abscesses can develop pretty easily.
I don’t think any medications will help since the same thick skin is going to prevent the medication from getting inside.

The two option seem to be - leave it alone or try and lance it.
