Potassium permanganate question.

Hi everyone,

Been exposed to external infections in my own tank and witnessed in some others recently.

I have heard of people using lower dosage of potassium permanganate in their tanks as a preventative measure for such external infections.

Is this something I could practice to avoid future infections? Does potassium permanganate kill inverts?

I do research but would like to see if there are any individuals with actual experience with potassium permanganate

It is very damaging to inverts, in fact in higher doses it is used as a coral dip to dissolve tough to kill pests and their eggs:

Eric Borneman says within, "Do not attempt to treat a reef tank using these methods. All treatments should occur in a treatment tank or container. Before using potassium permanganate, please read the MSDS sheets for potassium permanganate (e.g., http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ipcsneng/neng0672.html), because it can be a lethal compound if ingested, and this is a heretofore unmentioned use of this product."

I can verify that it works, but I would never ever use this for anything other than short term dipping. Even then it takes a heavy toll on coral.
