Hey all, I recently got this powder Brown Tang and got him set up in a 20 long with another male blue throat trigger. He's been in there for 4 days now and is being treated with cupramine. I did a freshwater dip before putting him in there and he was fine during it. He has been eating a little less then normal and definitely less active and more skittish. I noticed a red mark on his mouth yesterday and what looks like lateral line. I know this will probably go away after his is out of at but today I'm noticing a white growth in the affected area and not sure what it is. He is getting a varied diet but not really eating the nori. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, welcome to Reef2Reef.

To be clear, is the tang just not eating nori, or is it refusing all food?
Can you post your water quality readings?
Are you at full dose Cupramine? What test kit are you using?
Is the red lesion in the last picture only on its left side, or both right and left?

It's eating food just not nori. I can post water readings when I get home. I am at full dose cupramine and using salifert test kit. The markings are only visible on the left side.

OK, I’ll be back online around 6:30 est. Do you have any antibiotics to use if need be?

I only have paraguard but can't use that with cupramine. I can grab general cure, metroplex or others if needed.

None of those are true antibiotics - you may need something along the lines of neomycin, minocycline or Furan-2.

Ah ok, yeah he definitely doesn't look any better. If anything it's grown and he's breathing heavily.

We need to rule out water quality issues next....

O.K., then I would rule out ammonia burn. That pretty much leaves a bacterial infection, probably combined with a gill disease. The copper will help with the latter, but you'll want to dose the tank with a broad spectrum, gram negative antibiotic like the ones I listed before....or another in the same class of drugs.

Got it. The petsmart 5 minutes away has API products. Would you recommend furan 2 or erythromycin?

Furan-2, Erythromycin is more active against gram positive bacteria.
