Can I mount a powerhead externally? I was planning on putting hoses on both ends of a maxijet 600 and placing them both in the tank while mounting the pump outside the tank. I figured I would prime it in a sense by making sure water was in the inlet tube already.

Yes. It will work, I've seen others do so and calcium reactors made by GEO use the same pump for recirculation in their products.
