Practicing yoga with your reef tank: Do you use an aquarium leveling mat?

The leveling mat is kind of like a yoga mat for your tank to help fill small spaces or bits of unevenness where there may be small gaps between the tank and the stand. You may choose to always use a mat or just in certain situations such as for specific types of surfaces or only with a tank that doesn’t have a frame. Do you use an aquarium mat? Please share your experience if you have used a leveling mat and let us know if you have found the best thickness or best type of material.

I was going to use one on my new build, but the one I purchased from amazon must have skipped quality control because the width listed was off by about 6 inches. I decided to just proceed with the build without the leveling mat.

Level is more important for glass safety and I’m sticking with acrylic for safety.

i use a “5 and below” yoga mat under my sump just to help with any spills. no matter under the DT

My IM 75 is perfectly level. the previous two tanks i had did not have leveling mats and it was apparent when looking at the water levels on both. not off by much but i could definitely tell.

I'm so glad I don't have one of those tanks that likes to crack, if I did, I would definitely be doing some yoga

I used a Bean Products Yoga Mat under my 120 Gallon Aquarium, from Amazon. I was really impressed with the quality. To get the Aquarium from the Raised Pallet to the Stand, I used two pieces of screen batten, cut slightly longer than the stand. Rubbed Bees Wax on the top side and slid the Aquarium over. Tipped the Aquarium slightly and had my wife pull the battens out. My Other Aquariums have a plastic brace on the bottom and I don’t use a mat under them.

My tank is 36" front to back, so had to use an Oversized Mat.

I've always used 1/2" Styrofoam. I even used that on my custom 14' 850 gallon glass tank
23 years set up, and still in perfect condition!!!

I'm using this one. It might be an overkill but as this is my first tank I didn't want to risk it ;-)

IM comes with them, but I think they are must haves, especially with a rimless tank.

I use the one that came with my 32g but not on my 200g. The 200 was a high quality marine plywood stand and to my luck everything was as level as level gets when put in place. Probably helped that it was a good quality large tile floor on a concrete slab to start with.

Yes, I always used an aquarium mat at all my past aquariums, fresh and marine. Never tried to keep one without a mat
