I've long known about UV and its use in aquariums and have been aware of its potential benefits, but have always shrugged it off as being largely unnecessary unless you're experiencing a bacterial or phyto bloom, or attempting to reduce disease prevalence (which I'm still rather skeptical about in that regard, honestly).

Well fast forward to about two months ago. I had been having issues with a persistent bacterial bloom in one of my tanks, so I bought a dinky little 3 watt green killing machine UV unit. Well wouldn't you know it, the thing completely cleared up the bloom in about 4 days! And again, just in the past few weeks, another one of my tanks has been having a extremely aggressive phyto bloom that wasn't resolving, so same thing, I toss the little GKM in there, and low and behold, it's all cleared up in about 4-5 days as well!

Now the clearing up of the water isn't what surprised me. I was expecting that, lol. But what gets me is just how CRYSTAL CLEAR the water is in a tank running a UV! Like holy moly!! I read a post from someone else on here (I think) talking about how running UV gives your tank a "public aquarium" look, and I honestly can't agree more! I have never had water so absolutely crisp and clear looking, and am fully converted to the UV worshipper family. I'll absolutely be running UV on my tanks from here on out, lol.

Not really much else to the point, but just wanted to share this new revelation to anyone who might be on the fence about using UV on their tank.

Nice welcome to the UV club lol. It really does make a difference when you start using them. Just be sure to check the life expectancy on your bulb and mark in your calendar when it needs to be replaced. I usually replace mine once a year and I can tell when it starts to not be as effective.

It also does wonders for preventing fish disease outbreaks IME. Whenever I'm in the fish addition phase of starting a new tank, I keep a high powered UV running 24/7 at a slow flow rate. I think it's key to preventing ich in ich prone fish like Achilles.

Add me as a fan too. Question for those who use them regularly. Is there any benefit to scheduling them to run say half the day? And thus theoretically double the life expectancy? Or are you better off running it all day and just chalking up the replacement cost to the security of having a clean tank.
