They are but Neptune has done their research and believe the probe they have selected are the best suited for their equipment...

"Although many different manufacturers probes will work with the Apex, we have selected probes with very strict guidelines for tolerance and quality. Some cheaper pH probes may seem like a great way to save $20 but I assure you that recalibrating every few weeks and half the lifespan is not worth the price differential. Now I know what your thinking, of course he would say that, he's the marketing guy from Neptune. All I can say is that we have done our testing and analysis and try to give the best valued quality product."
I am not a rep for Neptune but I really stand by their product and believe him.
