I am in the middle of changing T5 bulbs for the first time and I was wondering what the safest way to dispose of these bulbs is? aren't there harmful to our environment gas in these and MH bulbs? what's everybody doing to dispose of these or are they worth keeping for some odd reason.

Fluorescent tubes are considered universal waste, so they are not accepted in most curbside programs and you will need to find a take-back program or drop-off location for recycling. Many hardware stores such as Lowes or Home Depot will take unbroken Tubes or CFLs.

From Lowe's website: https://www.lowes.com/cd_Recycling_368967519_

"Lowe's also made it easier for customers to make a difference by installing recycling centers in more than 1,700 stores throughout the United States. The permanent recycling centers, located at the store entrance, offer a free, convenient and easy way for customers to recycle rechargeable batteries, cell phones, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and plastic shopping bags. Lowe's stores in Canada also feature recycling centers to ensure CFLs and batteries are responsibly recycled."

Call ahead not ALL Lowe's offer this.

FWIW, my facilities manager here (work) lets me add them to his recycling bin, maybe ask at work to see if they'll let you do the same?
