Protien skimmer smell reduction (poorman version)

Hey guys this may seem dumb, but thought I share been doing this for months now, well as you know protien skimmers are basically fart machines I run mines constantly and well it smells so bad that my wife was constantly telling me the living room smells like crap. Well one day I was doing laundry and I thought hey ill just put one of those scented dryer sheets on top of the skimmer and sure enough it worked! Not 100% but wifey hasn't said anything about it since. Just thought I share this super cheap trick i use.

Hey that is a neat discovery. By the way skimmers shouldn’t smell if cleaned frequently :)

I also placed a bag of carbon on top of the lid, which worked for me.

I’ve also had customers add a bit of Kalkwasser to the cup to inhibit biological activity that increases skim smell

x2 on the clean skimmers dont stink train. If you clean it everyday why does it smell up the room?

I do clean the skimmer when the cup is full maybe every week or 2 but my skimmer is overkill for the tank old school diablo skimmer is a monster. Also my wife just over doses it, she smells everything I don't. But after I did that she said its much better I just change it every couple of days

I would say pick it up a little... At least clean it every other day if not every day.

going to try this also plus the dryer sheet! also wife is preggo so her smells are enhanced and according to her i smell as well :face-with-rolling-eyes:

If I clean the skimmer daily, when I rip one, I will have nothing to blame it on and she will know it was me

I used the foam packing material the skimmer cup lid was in and cut a hole in it and placed a dryer sheet over it. Works pretty well. My sump is in the garage so it isn't a major source of complaint from the wife.
