Hey

So I went to feed the Tangs this morning, flipped my nori clip out and opened it up to put more nori in and MY GOD the smell.

Think skimmate on steroids.
I’m SURE it was contributing to nitrates in the tank, but it was friggen gross.

Took it out and there were layers of nori rotting from when other nori was put in. (For the record normally my son puts the nori in so I didn’t even think to clean it).

Clean your nori clip!

Don’t know much about it, but I can tell you my nori clip stinks also but I believe it’s 0 protein so it doesn’t contribute to nitrates

the degradation of nori under a clip is anaerobic and will produce a bit of hydrogen sulfide and other things.

While nori does add N that can become nitrate, it is likely no more so from nori trapped under a clip than nori eaten by a fish, :)

Yes, its horrid and from sulfide. I clean mine as soon as algae is gone and also have a multitude of baby chitons which consume whats left

Less nori or more fish and problem solved. Nori doesn't last 5 minutes in my tank. Also I don't leave the clip in the tank once they're done.
Yup, mine are pigs too and lasts very little. It’s the nori that stays pinched if you don’t take it out that the problem.

My naso waits for that piece when he sees me removing the clip.
Haha! Same here. It’s always a competition mostly between the Sailfin and the Naso. They watch everything that’s going on always.
