Puffers in the reef??

I'm wondering what the consequences of putting a spiny puffer in a mixed reef would be? I know my snails would be end up as prey, but what about corals/clams? Anyone have success in the long term?

Puffers are intelligent and curious. They explore their surroundings and take bites and nibbles out of things to test for edibility. Most soft tissued or fleshy livestock at minimum gets sampled.

Yeah, puffers are generally not reef safe. They will eat corals, clams and all your inverts.

Ditto, some larger file fish too. Its a shame because they are so cute and friendly.

There are some people who have Toby puffers in their reef and have been successful and have great looking tanks, like a lot of things I think it depends on the individual.

I've not had problems with corals and tobie but I wouldn't trust them with cuc. The only thing my valentini did was bite onto my gorgonian at night, although no damage was done.

I have a valentini in one of the tanks I take care of that nips any new coral added to althe tank.

I've also kept leopard, solandri and a papua without any coral issues. Wish I could say the same for my lineatus blenny I have currently, guess sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you ain't:)
