Pump for sump return?

YEa I am down to the Ocean runner 2500 at 650gph or Eheim 1250 at 320 gallons per hour. One is about 6x turnover and the other is about 10x. Both are about the same porice as well........So what do you guys think I should get? Everything I have read says about 3-5x turn over so I don't know if 10x would be a bit to much. Even though I could t it off and have some of it piped back into the refug section of the sump.......Any advice?

Ok for the return line is it better to use flex line this way there is no corners or flex line to PVC return line? I have read both ways and some have said the flex line to PVC can cut down on noise and vibration.....Which sounds good to me....I was thinking of using flex line from return pump to return to tank. Any issues with that?

im planning on going pump > flex > barb hose valve > flex > barb fitting > bulkhead
so pretty much straight up

Well, I planned on going with the Eheim 1250 @ 320gph but I wasn't sure if that would be enough after some loss fue to the height that it would have to push the water. SO I went with the Ocean Runner 2500 @ 650 which I figure I can put a line in the return to bring it back to the refuge section of the sump to siphon off some of the GPH and as well as a ball valve or something to turn it down some if need be......Either way I think it will be more then enough for what I need.....If it's to much I can just go get the Eheim later.....Launch time looks to be about one month away as I got the carpet being bought and they are coming to measure etc... Tomorrow starting to get a little nervous....

Pump should be here tomorrow.....DR F&S had the best price I could find so I got it there.....Can't wait, now I need the pluming...

i use the eheim tubing from drfs, the 16/22 mm fits great. no need to mess with primer and glue required with pvc imo.

So you just use flex tubing from the pump to return in the tank than? I was kinda headed that way myself.....Do you have any ball joints or gate valves in that line so it (sump) can't get back filled from the tank or iss not really a worry?

as long as the return is near the water line it wont' back siphon. i do have ball valves in the return to dial down flow if needed. i'm also running three outlets off the or 2500, one to the display, one to fuge, one to carbon in phosban reactor.

Thanks twon......I was going to get the tubing and a couple of ball valves as well. The OR would be about 10 1/2 x turn over an hour which I kinda think is high from what I have read. So I figured I would take one line to the refuge section and the other to return and have a ball valve like you to slow it down a bit. I was thinking of connecting my Aqua-C to it as well but it is a HoB type and not sure if that would work. I have to use that one anyway for who knows how long till I can upgrade that equipment. I know they say you are supposed to feed them the water that comes in the dirtiest but I don't see where it would be any different at this point if it is in water that is in the first section or the third after the kinda refuge section where there will be some live rock etc.... Also How many people use a filter sock on the sump line? I have seen pics of them that don't and some that do but with the way the drain is I don't see that much that would be filtered unless they are more for the real fine stuff you don't really see......I have to finalize plans as the day of 60g launch will be approaching in the matter of a few weeks......Thank for your help man I appreciate it.


I just want to make sure this thing is as close to NO flooding as possible, cause if was to flood on the new carpet I can assure you I won't be on Club-zoa for a few months until I get out of the hospital and traction after the butt whooping I would get......Sounds funny but I ain't taking no chances or giving her the excuse to do it....

If you do use a filter sock make sure you clean it regularly. I had a flood because I was out of town and didn't know how often I needed to clean it. It got clogged, held too much water and flooded the floor when the auto topoff filled the sump.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked. Thankfully it wasn't a huge amount, but still. I did like using the sock cause it kept all the gunk out of my sump. I just didn't know how often I had to clean it. It was pretty much a new install before I was out of town on a job. Thankfully not so far that I couldn't come clean up the mess.

I'm thinking about adding a filter sock to my sump also - it definitely cleans the water and gives it that crystal clear look - but I hear most people say you need to clean them out every two days (most people keep a bunch and swap them out and wash them in batches with bleach). But I've also heard about them overflowing when dirty so if you go that route be sure and design line feed into sump and sock holder location so that you wont get flood - that is what I'm doing.

they are nice if you can keep them clean. I can't tell you how much gunk it kept out of the sump, but it was a whole lot.

I think I would rather hand vacume the sump then take the chance of a flood. See as how my hands are in the tank half the time any way, maybe I will just use some kinda filter floss instead or use one every 2-3 days and remove it or something.......Every 2 days sounds like a bit of work as well, plus I like to avoid arguments in the fact that the wife most likley doesn't want me to wash those things were we wash our clothes....I can hear that one already not that she is over bearing but just wouldn't understand as having never been around this stuff till she met me. She don't say anything about the money I spend on corals so I'll not threaten that with "Hey I'm gonna toss these nasty filter sock in with the wash OK?"...LOL
