What pumps seem to be the best for larger thickness aquariums? I am currently using my MP40's without any spacers on a 1" acrylic tank. Problem is if a snail gets near the wetside it falls off because its barely strong enough. MP60 would be overkill. Appreciate any suggestions.

That's a tough one. Most people with that thickness does closed loops.
