Purigen Regeneration

I've been running 1 bag (covers 100gal) of purigen in my HOB filter for about 3 months. It's brownish-yellow. Years ago on the Purigen package it said you can regenerate it with bleach and then neutralize it with Prime. Now packages do not have that instruction. Is this still a legimate method I can go by?

Agree with Arose. Just buy a new one. It’s definitely more trouble than it’s worth.

The package I just bought over the summer still describes how to regenerate.

24 hours in 1:1 non-scented, non-low-splash hyperchlorite bleach.
Rinse well and soak in fresh water with 3 tablespoons of prime per cup of water for 8 hours.

I recently did this and noticed my royal gramma 'flashing' against rocks, etc. So I removed the regenerated material and added a capful of prime and the next moring the gramma was acting normal again.

So now I am a bit afraid to use it after regeneration. I regenerated it AGAIN in case I didn't get all the bleach out. This time I did two 8-hour soaks in water/prime and let it dry, but I have yet to try again.

By the way, this stuff STINKS like old gym shoes or something...you are supposed to check for bleach smell before putting it back in the tank but it's hard to tell with the odor of the material itself.

As described above, I regenerated the Purigen again, but this time I did two 8-hour Prime/water soak to make SURE the chlorine was removed...I then put the wet material in the mesh bags, placed them on some paper towels, and by morning, the material was bone dry (!). I put the bags back into my tank a few days ago and the royal gramma is not reacting like it did the first time I tried this. Now I just need a few weeks to see if my nitrates start coming down. I am still not convinced it helps reduce nitrates.
