Quarantine procedure

I lost a fish the other day to ich. Fortunately it was not in my display tank. I had a conversation with the manger at the LFS he said I was quarantining incorrectly. I did want to get in to a long conversation with him so i let it go. So here I am now.

I am following the BRS 80/20 method. It goes roughly like this:

1. Fill 10 gal with my display water add. 2.5ppm copper power.

2. Every three days 100% waterchange keeping the copper at 2.5ppm for a total of 15 days

3. Day 16 bleach whole QT tank and rinse clean. Add water with prazipro

4. Every three days 100% water change for 9 days

Is this a bad way to QT.

Are you only doing one prazipro application? I believe you need at least two (7 to 8 days apart) to ensure you kill off any eggs that hatch into new flukes.

This I believe is something of a hybrid between medicated and Tank Transfer Method (TTM). I'd personally just stick with the medication, unless this was a very sensitive fish. Copper Power is fairly easy-going compared to older copper products.

This sounds like a terrible process. I'd do a couple of different things

1). Do a couple of days of observation if no visible signs of disease. Best to let fish get accustomed to things before adding more stress by medicating.

2). Depending on the fish, raise the levels appropriately to 2.5 copper levels. I'd do it over two days or four days for sensitive fish.

3). I'd run 30 days copper if you can and if it is a fish species that tolerates it. Or I would do 14 days and transfer. You mentioned you have one tank, I tried what you did on a small batch of 3 cardinals. I let the bleached tank dry in the sun for three hours and wiped it down good, soaked it in RO and then refilled things. All three died. I think you need to keep the tank dry or empty longer for the bleach to be inert. If you must use the same tank, I'd put the fish in a storage tote or something overnight.

4). I'd run Prazi 3 times 7-8 days apart. You are trying to abbreviate the whole process and will likely not kill things during the lifecycle as necessary.

Seeing as you went through some loss of fish, I'd slow things down. Nothing good comes fast.
