Question about setting up FO Tank

So, I Have a 50 Gallon fresh water tank set up already and is now vacant and wanted to/thinking of converting it into a Fish only tank.

Now, the tank has CARIBSEA Super Naturals Aquarium Substrate Moonlight Sand, a really fine sand ( CaribSea - Super Naturals? )
I'm guessing you know what my question will be.... anywho, can I use this sand for a Fish Only tank? Maybe damsels, or other aggressive small size fish? And do I still need a skimmer? It currently runs on a canister filter, do I need another sump for it?

I hope my question is not too dumb, but heck... I am a noob! So.... shoot me! lol your replies that is. :xd:

I can't answer the sand question, but as far as the skimmer and sump go....no, you don't "need" them. You can have a successful FO or reef tank without them...(for FO, you don't need to be as concerned about elevated nitrate levels.) That being said, I would recommend both. The sump is nice for the extra water volume and being able to hide your equipment. The skimmer removes all kinds of waste before it has a chance to break down and pollute your water.
