I'm guessing everything else in your tank is doing good? aside from the basic water quality questions, I can tell you that I have several frags, all from the same main leather that I've had for years. All placed about the same place in my tank. Most of them are fine and 1 or 2 of them have been doing a very similar thing. I don't have an answer to why but when they do open up, they appear fine.

It might have been shedding because whenever you first introduce a Toadstool, they usually shed because that is their way of acclimating, as mine didn't open up the first two weeks and shed about twice a day. I'm not sure if toadstools split, but sometimes when you get a new toadstool, the tissue at the base, since it is shedding so much, becomes softer and it bends and "Falls over". Mine also does this at night, but in the day it looks great. What kind of toadstool is it?

im not sure specifically what leather it is, it was just sold to me as a toadstool leather, but it didnt have its polyps extended in the shop (when i bought it i had no idea they had long polyps)

Can you post your water parameters and a little background on the tank? (Is it new? How is it maintained? Co-inhabitants? Etc.)

At minimum this helps to rule out some things, but also might reveal the problem.

i have a fairly large chunk of gsp and a small colony of zoas, both are doing great, it didnt have its polyps extended in the shop which makes me believe its something to do with the leather itself rather than water parameters/acclimation, the photo doesnt show it very well but it appears to be "pinching" its cap off in some areas, and theres a pretty distinct line in its base

The reason it looks like it might be pinching off is because they might have fragged it by cutting off some of the crown, which is causing it to become top heavy on one side, so it is slowly tearing off.
