Question from newbie about outflow in AIO

Hi there, I’m Roxanne and I have a brand new, and currently empty (except for water), AIO tank from Innovative Marine : the Fusion pro 40 gal.

My question today is about the little movable plastic “screens” you can use to cause more or less of a cascade into the back section from the display. I currently have them set all the way low and there’s a fair amount of sound of water falling. Is this ideal due to oxygen being generated? Or should I “quiet it down” by raising them?

I have some of the IM Fusion tanks, and I have those IM High Tide water risers on my 25 gallon lagoon. They do indeed make your water level go higher, which can cause more noise as the water goes through the weir (the "slots" on the intake where the High Tide attaches). I typically run some filter floss or Poly-Fil in the top of my media basket right behind the weir, which I think would help with your noise.

I do try to have a little cascade of water going from chamber to change in the filter section of my tanks, this increases gas exchange (CO2 out and O2 in), and well as prevents any film from building on the surface of the water in the back filter section.

Thanks so much! Yes, that’s what I thought re: the gas exchange. I might try the floss idea; thanks for that. I currently have a filter sock at one end and a caddy with just those bioballs at the other. I don’t need a lot of filtration yet, so I removed the bag of carbon for the moment. I can add filter floss there for sure. In all honesty, the cascading water sounds pretty nice anyway.

I am expecting an order of live rock and sand from Tampa Bay Saltwater on Monday and I’m very excited!

Of course, you'd probably want to make the back area as quiet to your ears as you can, rather than think that's where your greatest oxygenation needs to come from. Your flared returns (set near the water level) and a wavemaker will aerate your tank. The only tiny bit of flow you need in the back chamber is to keep surface dust/gunk from settling. I hope that makes sense.

I'd agree with that, I do it more to keep the film off the water surface in the back of my AIO's. How much gas exchange it provides may be negligible. Thank you for your reply!

Good to know. I will adjust things when the MP10 arrives. The two base outflows seem a bit weak. Once the surface moves a bit more, I’ll adjust the weirs!
