Here’s one thought, just a suggestion.

Clearly, Clownfish are aggressive, no argument now. And forgetting about tank size, many would suggest that you add Clownfish last to your tank. This allows other, more timid fish to get used to their surroundings, and find their hiding spots. Sometimes, if you add Clownfish to a tank first they will claim the entire tank as their territory, and defend it aggressively against any other fish. This is especially not good if you add a delicate fish after the clowns.

If you know you’re going to upgrade to a 50 gallon soon, I would suggested thinking about what you want in your 50 gallon ultimately, and maybe getting some of the smaller, more peaceful fish now. Then, add your Clowns to your 50 gallon last.

I might think about taking the hit on the cost and taking the Clowns back if you can. For whatever reason, your fish don’t seem to be working out right now in your particular tank.
