Rainbow Monti question

This is something that kinda made me wonder... Why are the newer polyps of the rainbow a different color than the older ones. Like what purpose does that serve? Most corals new growth grow in a uniform manner where they are just a lighter and whiter in color but are all the same. Does anyone know why sone corals have a completely different color in the new growth versus the older established polyps?

It's interesting. Most corals don't do this but some do. I'm guessing it has to do with maturity or something. It's looks really cool though
