random question about live rock

So I may be incorrect but i recall a few years ago people making some sort of live rock substitute in order to skip paying a ton for live rock. Now I will be starting a cycle anyway when I get to that point si I know the rock will not be "live rock" but please lmk if anyone has any experience with this. Thank in advanced! !!
