I had a look through the ‘Common Problematic Algae’ and couldn’t find an answer, hoping someone here can help.

I recently (~3 weeks) introduced some new coral frags to my tank, they‘ve generally been doing pretty well. This is the only change to my tank in about 3-4 months, so it’s been pretty stable.

I noticed recently that one of my existing (not new) Corals has developed a layer of red ‘gunk’ which is pretty rapidly spreading, it’s now covered almost 50% of the coral.

I tried to take it off with a tooth brush about 10 days ago, but it came back pretty quickly.

I’m concerned that pretty soon, this coral will be gone, and maybe some others in the tank.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Looks sort of like cyano. Do you have good water flow where this coral sits?
Hi @GillMeister thanks for getting back to me.

As it happens, no, this particular piece of coral was recently moved and it’s now in a part of the tank with probably the least water flow. I have a pumphead I could throw in pretty easily, do you think that would help? I don’t know much about Cyano…

Cyano likes low flow areas, and corals like high flow. Getting some flow around this guy could fix your problem.
