Does anyone have any experience/ success using red lighting for watching fish spawning without disturbing the fish? I have heard that red lighting doesn't bother the fish, but I have had limited success looking up info related to spawning under red lighting. My original plan was lighting the 600 gallon bloodstock tank with a homebrew 100W IR led setup, but after some testing, it looks like water is mostly opaque to IR... I figure Red is the next best thing.

Use a flashlight with a red balloon stretched over it

Just get a headlamp with a red only mode. A lot of headlamps include red only emitters. They are popular at night because you can see with them and the red light doesn't diminish your night vision like a bright white light does.

Most headlamps made for hunting/outdoors will have a red only mode. You can find cheap ones on Amazon that do this also.
