Fact #181

Granular ferric oxide (aka gfo) is great for keeping your phosphates low but it can drop your alk when first added. As with most supplements, start with a low amount.

True or False and what do you have to add to this subject? Please share your photos as well! :D

I think you should start with a low amount but I haven't experienced an alk drop when using it. I have run into issues with using too much too soon and stripping phosphates too low. Gfo is very good at what it does!

It definitely does a great job of binding phosphates. Also, be sure to wash it thoroughly before use.

I have tried gfo and didnt like it as coral started losing coral coloration. I did use it after setting up a new tank to decrease algae bloom, but tend to stay away from it. I wander what might cause it to lower alkalinity
