Compared to seawater at pH 8.5, how many more free protons (H+) are there in seawater at pH 7.5?


A. Ten times as many
B. Twice as many
C. Equal numbers
D. Half as many
E. One-tenth as many

Well, can't fool you guys today.

As you all got right, the answer is... A. Ten times as many

pH is a logarithmic scale. That means that for every change of 1 pH unit lower, H+ increases by a factor of 10.

So pH 7 has ten times as much H+ as pH 8, and pH 6 has 100 times as much as pH 8. :)

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
