I’ve been entertaining the idea of changing up my tank a little and would like to possibly make a shipwreck theme, but I’m not overly impressed with the ship aquarium decor available. I think I could make my own sunken ship that’s much more to my liking. Does anyone know of any reef safe clay or cement that’s moldable?? Or other material suggestions for a project like this?

I was thinking of the same for my 400 gallon tank build. But then veered away from it as I didn’t like the thought of a tang being 1/3 or half the size of the shipwreck. Just doesn’t look right to me. I then thought it may be cool to build a tank with maybe a reef growing next to a crab pot or something that we may see in the ocean that isn’t necessarily a shipwreck.
Maybe on my next build but I went with a faux back wall. I have several pieces of clay in my tank and I used Sculpey Original. It’s taken longer for it to change color to match the other rocks but no ill effects

Thank you! You just fire the clay in the oven, correct?
Yeah, having a tiny ship with big fish would defeat the purpose I think as well. My tank is fairly small though, so the fish aren’t over 3-4” and I want the ship to be almost the length of the tank (24”), so I think it could look decent, especially if I do some illusion work and make it look like you can only see a portion of the ship or something.

What did you decide to make with the Sculpey and have in your tank now? Do you have any corals or just fish?
